Often misunderstood by our society, infertility isn’t just bad luck, a mild inconvenience or a state of mind. It is a medical condition that affects the functions of the reproductive system, which makes getting pregnant difficult. At Tulsa Fertility Center, our fertility specialists recognize the pain and frustration infertility can create for our patients and their partners. We believe getting the right infertility diagnosis means the difference between success and failure for those trying to conceive.
How do we define infertility?
Any individual or couple who has actively tried to get pregnant for more than 12 months without success – or six months if the female partner is older than 35 – will likely receive an infertility diagnosis. Infertility is a disease of the reproductive system that interferes with the ability to conceive and/or carry a pregnancy to term.
With infertility, normal reproductive functions, such as ovulation, sperm production, egg fertilization, embryo implantation, or a combination of these factors, don’t occur as expected, which turns trying to conceive into a challenge.
How do we achieve the right infertility diagnosis?
In our Tulsa fertility clinic, our doctors employ advanced reproductive technology to diagnose and treat infertility. Pinpointing the cause or causes of infertility enables our fertility specialists to create a personalized treatment plan, so that we can increase the odds of a successful pregnancy. Many elements are needed to make the right infertility diagnosis.
- A complete medical history for you and your partner, to look for any prior surgeries or medical conditions that could impede the chances of conceiving
- Bloodwork to review hormone levels, evaluate ovulation function, and assess ovarian reserve, or egg supply
- Semen analysis for the male partner to determine if any issues exist with sperm quality, quantity, shape or movement
- A pelvic exam and transvaginal ultrasound to visualize the reproductive system and check for any physical concerns related to the ovaries, fallopian tubes or uterus
- Imaging exams to check whether fallopian tubes are open for sperm and eggs to move through
- Preconception genetic screenings to see if either parent is a carrier for any inheritable diseases that could cause problems with embryo development or be passed on to a child
Once we receive the results of these tests, your doctor can review the findings and propose the best solution for achieving optimal results: a beautiful baby to bring home.
