When a woman is having trouble getting pregnant, the team at our Tulsa fertility clinic begins her fertility evaluation with a physical examination. We also take a thorough medical history. All of these steps provide valuable information, but we also need to do female fertility testing to properly assess a woman’s fertility. We tailor our testing to each woman because everyone has different issues and different needs.
Basic fertility tests for a fertility evaluation
In almost every case, our team begins their diagnostic process with certain basic fertility tests.
- Ovarian reserve testing, which provides information about a woman’s egg supply
- Hormone testing, in which we check the levels of follicle-stimulating hormones (FSH), prolactin, anti-Mullerian hormone (AMH), thyroid-stimulating hormones (TSH), luteinizing hormone (LH) and other hormones
- Transvaginal ultrasound
Procedures help our team dig deeper
The team at our Tulsa fertility clinic performs a variety of non-surgical procedures as part of female fertility testing.
If our fertility doctors suspect physical abnormalities, they may recommend a hysterosalpingogram (HSG). Basically, this test is an X-ray with dye that shows our physicians the uterine cavity and fallopian tubes. The provider injects dye into the uterus through a catheter inside the cervical canal. The dye moves through the fallopian tubes and uterus, providing detailed images.
Some women need a sonohysterogram to help detect endometrial fibroids and polyps or other intrauterine issues. During this transvaginal ultrasound, our team slowly adds a sterile saline solution to the uterus through a small catheter.
Women who repeatedly experience implantation failure may also need an endometrial biopsy as part of their female fertility testing.
Our surgeons sometimes perform minimally invasive surgical evaluations
When a woman’s fertility evaluation indicates that there may be problems such as endometriosis, uterine abnormalities, pelvic adhesions, polyps or fibroids, she may need a surgical evaluation. There are two types of surgical fertility evaluation, and both are minimally invasive.
- Hysteroscopy, in which our physician inserts a lighted instrument called a hysteroscope through the cervix into the uterus to view the uterine cavity. Our physicians also perform hysteroscopies to treat problems that are contributing to infertility.
- Laparoscopy, in which our surgeon inserts a lighted instrument called a laparoscope through very small incisions in the abdomen into the pelvic cavity. Our physicians both diagnose and treat problems with this technique.
